Music Photography 2010

2010 has been a turbulent year in many aspects and therefore has seen a knock on in the amount of jobs I have been able to take shooting live music or portrait/promotional work. But having said that the shows in which I have taken I picked and chose some fantastic shows and great photo opportunities. With only shooting at one festival all year it was a complete opposite to the previous year and the current year to come. It seems I have a busy 2011 ahead of me with the possibility of shooting at Primavera Sound in Barcelona where the likes of The Flaming Lips, Grinderman, The National and a reunion of Pulp will be taking place. Then Roskilde Festival, BeatDay and Way Out West all on the radar for 2011 its shaping up to be a great year before it even starts.

But till then here is a reflection of some of my favourite shots of 2010

50 Cent, Brondby Stadium, Copenhagen, DK
This was rather special. Not only is 50 Cent a world-wide superstar A lister and one hell of a performer. I had the great privilege of been the only photographer in Denmark to be granted a photo pass. Even though my time in the pit was cut short to 2 songs I wasn't going to argue with Fiddy's security guards on this one and made way some cracking images.

Ian Brown, Lille Vega, Copenhagen, DK
The mans a legend. Been crowned the God Like Genius Award by music magazine NME for all he has done from The Stone Roses to his solo work this show was more about the music than it would ever provide great shots given this venue always dully delivers with its lighting and no barrier making it an impossible task to make the front row to capture his monkey stomp I settled for a few rows back and captured this frame.

Crystal Castles, Store Vega, Copenhagen, DK
I shot Crystal Castles at BeatDay a year before where I believe I shot some of my best photos of 2009 and recently one of the images from that show made the cut for the shortlist of NME's Photo Awards 2010, which I'd say has to be the greatest achievement of the year. Having said that this show didn't fail to disappoint. They always make a photographers life misery with the constant strobe lighting used at their shows, but in turn can make for some fantastic and well rewarding shots. I had the privilege of been able to take photos onstage of the band due to their no photographers in the pit rule which suited myself and the other photographers perfectly. This shot shows Alice Glass as she slumps resting on her mic stand while her adoring fans watch on.

The Blackout, Store Vega, Copenhagen, DK
This was shot as The Blackout supported Limp Bizkit's show at the Store Vega. I made an agreement with their management to shoot their whole set with to possibility of using a flash light I used this to my advantage with only a wash of back lighting I captured this shot of frontman Gavin Butler leaping at the climax of their show. It really shows the emotion and energy the band put into their live performances, fabulous band and came out of this concert with a strong set of images.

Jonsi, Store Vega, Copenhagen, DK
Jonsi's album Go has been by far my favourite and most likely overplayed album on my ipod of 2010, it features the beautful sound of Sigur Ros with an upbeat positive colourful flavour. The live show with the projectionist song by song story of Jonsi's vision of the album of a forest burning down and then springing back into life really added to the beauty of this live set. As for the photos we only got to shoot from the left side of the stage but Jonsi's own lighting crew made for some great atmospheric shots this night and was left feeling extremely uplifted by the end of the set.

Nas and Damian Marley, Store Vega, Copenhagen, DK
Similar to Jonsi with an album I have hit hard this year. This great collaboration between to two superstar figures in their own genres came together to make an album that speaks to the masses. I have a new found respect for Nas who in my eyes has to be one of the most respected rappers in the industry not only for his rhymes but for his live performance. Having said that I have opted for this live image of Damian Marley who at first glance could be easily mistaken for his great father. Warmest and most energetic crowds of 2010.

Deftones, KB Hallen, Copenhagen, DK
This was the second time of 2010 I shot Deftones for Soundvenue. The first time round was at CopenHell and the whole thing seemed a little rushed with the lighting and sound all been very average since they had an agreement to play the show and quickly jump a plane to play Download Festival in England early the next day. However the seconded sitting of this show at the KB Hallen proved to be a triumph and the perfect venue for such a band. The crowd were extremely pumped up for the show and the band clearly fed on this with Chino Moreno on great form. With his raised platform situated at the front of the stage all the photos became very same same, this was shot on the climax of My Own Summer (Shove it) as he leapt from his platform and is personally one of my favourite images I think I've ever shot.

To say 2010 was quiet I'm still please with the progress I made with some of my images and 2011 looks set to be very exciting.....
